Acupuncture and Fertility: What to Know Before You Start

How acupuncture is commonly used alongside fertility treatment in Australia, what the evidence does and doesn't show, and how to choose a practitioner with the right experience.

Fertility is one of the most common reasons people seek out acupuncture, often alongside IVF or other assisted reproductive treatment. If you’re considering it, you’ll want clear, calm information rather than promises — so here’s a grounded overview of what acupuncture for fertility involves and how to choose well.

What People Use It For

In a fertility context, acupuncture is most often used as a complementary support: something done alongside the care of a GP, fertility specialist, or IVF clinic, not in place of it. People turn to it hoping to reduce stress, support regular cycles, and feel they’re taking an active, calming role during what can be a demanding process.

Some clinics offer acupuncture timed around IVF procedures, and many practitioners work with patients across the months leading up to and during treatment cycles.

What the Evidence Shows — and Doesn’t

This is where honesty matters most.

Research into acupuncture and fertility has produced mixed results. Some studies have suggested possible benefits around stress, wellbeing, and sleep during treatment; others have found no clear effect on pregnancy or live birth rates when acupuncture is added to IVF. Large, well-designed trials in particular have generally not shown that acupuncture improves IVF success rates.

What can be said fairly is this: the strongest, most consistent theme is that many people find acupuncture a calming, supportive experience during a stressful time — and that managing stress and feeling cared for has its own value. What the evidence does not support is treating acupuncture as something that reliably increases your chance of conceiving. Be wary of any clinic that claims otherwise or guarantees results.

Work With Your Medical Team

If you’re trying to conceive, or already under the care of a fertility specialist, keep them in the loop. Tell your acupuncturist about any medications, hormone treatments, or IVF timelines, and tell your fertility team that you’re having acupuncture. The two should sit comfortably alongside each other, and good practitioners on both sides will support that.

This is especially important once you’re pregnant or undergoing a treatment cycle, as some acupuncture points and approaches are adjusted during these periods.

Choosing the Right Practitioner

Fertility support is an area where experience genuinely matters. When you’re looking, consider:

  • AHPRA registration. Every acupuncturist practising in Australia must be registered with the Chinese Medicine Board of Australia. This is non-negotiable — check it first.
  • Relevant experience. Ask whether they regularly work with fertility patients and alongside IVF clinics.
  • A collaborative attitude. The best practitioners are happy to work with your medical team, not to position themselves as an alternative to it.
  • Honest, measured language. Look for someone who talks about support and wellbeing rather than guarantees.
  • Cost and frequency. Ask how often they’d recommend sessions and what it will cost over a typical course, and check whether your private health extras offer a rebate.

A Sensible Mindset

If acupuncture helps you feel calmer, more supported, and more in control through your fertility journey, that’s a meaningful benefit in itself. Approach it as gentle, complementary support — chosen with a registered, experienced practitioner and shared openly with your medical team — and you’ll be making a well-informed decision.
