Dr. James is absolutely amazing! I’ve been seeing him for a while now, and he’s helped me so much with my health and overall well-being. His treatments are great for both the body and the mind, and he truly cares about his patients. I always leave feeling better, lighter, and more balanced. I can’t recommend him enough.

I decided to come to the clinic based on reviews and location. The first impression I had of Dr James was a positive one but as the consultation progressed I felt that he was mocking me in regards to my anxiety and depression. Telling me things like "I know exactly what you are like" You worry about the smallest things" "You are not patient" I was in shock! But I just put my head down and agreed. I was hesitant to get some cupping done but went ahead with it. He said he will be back in 5 minutes to remove them whilst he attended another patient. Well, he left the door wide open as I was sitting there half naked! At least the lovely receptionist had the decency to come in and check on me and close the door! When I got home, I was concerned about the cupping marks on my shoulders, they appreared to be a bit swollen. I called James and he said to come in and he will have a look. When he saw the marks he kind of laughed and dismissed it as being the cup marks and it will eventually calm down. The next day I called him again as I told him my tinnitus had gotten worse and if this is normal? He was so arrogant towards me saying that he has thousands of patients and Im the ONLY one who has consistently called him like I was an annoyance! I told him I was concerned and had questions and if he couldn't handle that then I will go elsewhere and how dare he speak to me in such a manner! He told me once again to be patient and I worry a lot. Dr James, you need to be a bit more understanding and show some empathy towards your patients. Not everyone is at a level of you WANT them to be. If anyone needs to be more patient its YOU. You DONT know me and what Im going through so dont assume anything. Patients come to you for healing and to have a positive experience well mine was nothing of the sort. There are countless of other practitioners that we can all go to who perform the same treatments as you and I'm confident they will not treat patients as being a "nuisance" if they have concerns or questions. Very disappointed it came to this.

I had my first appointment with Dr. James Tam at Pivotal Chinese Medicine in Yarraville a week ago and my second one today. I went in for chronic shoulder pain from a rotator cuff injury and a lingering sinus issue that made sleep difficult. After just one session, I felt immediate relief in both areas. Within two days, I could lift my arm freely with minimal to no pain, and my sleep improved significantly. My stress levels also dropped, and I noticed a real boost in my overall wellbeing. Dr. Tam used acupuncture, cupping, and targeted massage, explaining everything clearly throughout. The clinic is spotless and professional, and Julie at reception is always warm and welcoming. I highly recommend Pivotal Chinese Medicine to anyone dealing with chronic pain or ongoing health issues the results have been amazing.

Dr. James is absolutely amazing. I’ve seen a few different acupuncturists over the years for different ailments, however none of them have been as effective as Dr. James. He is accurate in diagnosing you and spends time explaining to you the conditions. Within a week of taking the herbs my energy and overall health improved drastically. What I like about Dr. James is he answers questions and puts effort in explaining your condition to you, whereas other practitioners briefly tell you about your condition and not going through the recommended dietary and lifestyle changes you need to take etc. He is professional and treats you with care, checking in with you along the way. Can’t thank him enough 🙏 worth the money.

Frequently Asked Questions

QIs Pivotal Chinese Medicine highly rated?

With a 4.7-star rating from 53 Google reviews, Pivotal Chinese Medicine is one of the highest-rated providers in the area. Patient reviews are a helpful way to get a feel for the quality of care and service you can expect.

QHow much does a session cost at Pivotal Chinese Medicine?

Fees are not listed here, so it is worth asking when you book. Across fifteen Australian clinics that publish their prices, an initial consultation runs $100 to $190, with most sitting between $105 and $145. Follow-up sessions run $50 to $130, most commonly $80 to $120.

The first appointment costs more almost everywhere, typically $20 to $40 more, because it includes a case history alongside the treatment and usually runs longer. Roughly a quarter of clinics will not quote you a full price list online.

Three things worth asking on the same call: whether herbs or cupping are charged separately — they usually are — whether the clinic offers on-the-spot health fund claiming, and what the cancellation policy is, because some charge a full session fee inside 24 hours.

QCan I claim a session at Pivotal Chinese Medicine on Medicare or private health?

Private health, usually yes. Acupuncture sits under natural therapies on most extras policies, generally pooled with remedial massage under one shared annual limit. As an example of the shape, HCF's Top Extras pays $40 a visit with an annual limit rising from $300 to $500 by year three, and nib's Top Extras pays 75% back against a $400 combined limit. Waiting periods of two months are standard. Recognition is fund-by-fund, so check that this practitioner is recognised by your fund before booking.

Medicare, only if your practitioner is a doctor. The four MBS acupuncture items all require a medical practitioner. A registered acupuncturist who is not also a doctor cannot bill them, and no other item covers their services. Acupuncture is also not on the eligible list for a GP Chronic Condition Management plan.
